Spotlight: Teresa Shear, Donor Dash & Rett’s

Today’s blog will not be on one subject, usually found here. Instead this is one of those tidbit, or hodge podge type blogs ……. a little of this and a little of that.

Broncos – Teresa Shear

One of my favorite people of all time is moving to Florida. Teresa Sheer……head every thing for the Broncos left the Bronco organization this month.

Teresa has been with the Broncos for 21 years…..when you look at Teresa you swear she is barely 21 years of age. Teresa you know where to send the quarter for the compliment……laughing now.

I have known Teresa for ever and I will miss her dearly. She is one detailed and organized lady, you should see the pre-game and half time, time tables. Precise and to the minute. Awesome job for sure, she handles it with such grace and style. A class lady for sure.

The reason for the move, Teresa’s daughter Tatum. She is a special person too…..she is an excellent tennis player.

She is going to a private school to become an even better tennis player….. Look out world for Tatum, I am sure we will see her on the pro circuit soon.

Besides someone I have done business with I consider Teresa my friend. Teresa you know I love ya and you will be missed.

Donor Dash 2014

The 2014 Donor Dash was a huge success, the race was held on July 20th at Wash Park….. Hope you were there.

Balloons by Absolute Value worked all night long to provide two 50 foot spiral arches……for the start and finish line. 8 six foot columns for the stage and 2,500 balloons for the memorial release.

This event gets bigger and bigger each year…..more participants brings more stories and of course more tears of joy and sadness.

I am the face of Balloons by Absolute Value, but the company is really my great employees…… My grand daughter Joanna (Bubba) and her boyfriend Corey (The Stiff) flew in from Detroit to help this year.

Joseph, Salena, Laura, Jenny Ann you are amazing. Thanks for all the hard work……. I have the best crew in all of Colorado and it shows.

We finished unloading and setting up this event with plenty of time to spare. The Donor Alliance people were real happy campers.

Remember you can register to be an organ donor at your DMV or on-line at the Donor Alliance site. Please register, it is that important.

Rett’s Syndrome

Rett’s Syndrome Strollathon is happening on August 2nd at Clement Park…. Balloons by Absolute Value has been involved in this event since it began and again is proud to participate this year.

Rett Syndrome is a disorder of the nervous system that leads to development reversals, especially in language and hand use. Rett’s occurs almost exclusively in girls and may be misdiagnosed as autism or cerebral palsy. The condition affects about 1 out of 10,000 children.

The disease slowly progresses until the patient is a teenager. Then symptoms may improve. For example, seizures or breathing problems tend to lessen in late adolescence. Now I am no expert on this disease, but you can find out more about Rett’s Syndrome on the internet. Check it out..

If you like to walk or run…..this would be a great event for you. Help support the great people, parents and relatives of this terrible disease.

Spotlight on Amber Laiminger & The Island

Giant balloon centerpieces at The island

About 11 years ago I got a call from one of my Jewish moms about holding a Mitzvah at The Island….. had no clue what or where she was talking about.

So we set up an appointment to meet there….. The Island Event Center is off Illiff and Parker Road on Genoa….. This is a huge building from the outside, like a big barn….a big, big, big barn.

You enter into a bar area and then on either side are two very large areas….I mean very large areas for beach volleyball…… 3 courts on each side with tons of sand.

The walls have painted beach murals ….. a very cool effect…the ceilings are extremely high …. so big balloon decor works very well here.

The Island can handle very large events….the venue can be configured in many ways… so no two events are exactly the same. The Island is a one of kind venue…… awesome.

Though it is a indoor volleyball center, lots of themes work beautifully there. We can help you decide what will really look great there.

Enough about The Island…… they have this super lady who is the General Manager……her name is Amber Laiminger. When I met her 11 years ago I instantly liked her.

She has this easy going manner, that make people feel right at home. A true professional, detail oriented and well organized. Unlike so many people in this industry, she doesn’t hard sell her clients which happens to be my clients as well. Things just flow with her and she makes it happen with such ease.

Amber knows her stuff…. the events always turn out near perfection….nothing is perfect. Last minute changes don’t sent her into a panic…She just goes with the flow.

I really can’t say enough good things about Amber, she is that special. I love her like a daughter. So you know now, my recommendation for her is….. Top Shelf all the way.

If you are looking for a venue that is unique and fun, The Island Event Center is for you…..Don’t believe me….check it out for yourself.

Spotlight on the Donor Dash

Donor Dash – A Run for Life

It’s that time of year again for another Donor Dash ….. an important time of year for all of us.

The Donor Dash is the Donor Alliance’s signature event, a 5k walk or run. The Donor Alliance are the nice people who are responsible for collecting and redistributing donated body organs. It’s a job that I don’t think I could do, but they are remarkable people who do a fantastic job.

Literally hundreds of lives are saved and other lives are enriched by the kindest of people donating body parts of loved ones. This may not be the best or politically correct way of saying it, but that is what they do.

There are many reasons for the Donor Dash held at Wash Park each year. Making people more aware of donating organs, raising money and remembering loved ones who have donated organs so others may have a better life, to name just a few.

One of the perks of being in the balloon business is being involved in events like the Donor Dash. A truly remarkable event where I make new friends and see old ones, really great people to work and be with.

I am involved in lots of events that tug at my heart strings. This is one that really get to me for lots of different reasons. The balloon release is so totally awesome, can’t explain the emotions I feel when I see all the balloons being released. It’s something you should see and feel for yourself.

So please join me for the Donor Dash this year.

When:  Sunday, July 20th – starts at 8:00 am

Where:  Wash Park

Who:  You and your friends and family

So “Come on down” as Monty Hall use to say to Wash Park and be a part of one of the best events in Denver. You won’t regret it.

ps. I am a registered organ donor, are you? If you’re not an organ donor already, sign up to be one the next time you’re at the DMV, it’s so easy, believe me.

Happy Fourth of July

Fireworks Sculpture – Colorado Athletic Club

Gosh, half the year is over with already, I can hardly believe it. It wasn’t long ago it seems that we were complaining about the cold weather…..

The 4th of July will soon be here and we will all be planning picnics, trips to Elitches or Lakeside, the mountains or in my sons case his favorite lake to go fishing.

Then towards dusk we will be gathering up the blankets, coolers and folding chairs to go to our favorite place to watch fireworks.

In my neighborhood you will hear firecrackers, bottle rockets and an occasional illegal fireworks go off all day and night.

Which stirs a memory of when I was a pup in Minnesota, times were simpler then and everyone took the time to smell the roses or on the Fourth of July, the smell of sulphur and gunpowder (fireworks).

We would always go to the same lake each year for fishing and a family picnic….. Oh so much food… can smell the burgers and hot dogs my mom was cooking on the outdoor grill at the lake. No gas or charcoal….just firewood…

The guys were all pitching horseshoes and drinking lots of Hamms or Grainbelt beer. All of us kids were just being annoying according to my mom and grand mom…. Think they were right.

When it was getting late…..we packed up everything and headed back to Minneapolis….. and go to the neighborhood park with our blankets and folding chairs….and of course a cooler full of pop and beer.

It seemed we all sat together by blocks a chance for neighbors to reminisce and exchange the latest gossip.

I grew up in Minnesota where fireworks were illegal but it seemed everyone knew someone who travel to Wisconsin to get them.

My old man was no exception, he knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew a guy who had them or could get them.

Once we were settled in at the park, the old man would pull out the firecrackers, cherry bombs, M-80’s …… bottle rockets were set-up by my uncles and grandpa’s.

Can remember a time that there was no shortage of stupid when one block shot bottle rockets across the park to another block…. They returned fire.

Thinking about it now… was pretty cool.. Seeing the rockets criss crossing the baseball and football fields… I know it is a guy thing…. but it was very cool.

Little kids were waving sparklers … so cute

Then the fireworks would start to go off….. no music like they have now…….you could almost here a pin drop just before the first one went off…….

Then boom……….. the ah’s and oh’s came from all over the park. Then another and another…… you could here that “was my favorite” or ” wow, that was so cool”.

You could here the fire crackers going off in between the big fireworks……lady fingers, black cats, M-80’s… a cherry bomb every once in a while.

Man you could tell it was getting close to the grand finale. Fire works were going off quicker and then all of a sudden the sky was filled with amazing colors of all kind…. gold and green are still my favorite.

Then the park lights would come on and it was time to go home. As the families were walking home you could here them talking about how great the day was.

Once we got home, the old man brought out his secret stash and we sat in the backyard lighting the rest of the fireworks.

You heard my story, tell me how you spend the Fourth.

So I wish you and your family a happy Fourth of July.
